Separating the protective backing material from the actual iron-on covering can often be a tedious process. However, using two pieces of masking tape can make the job easier. Apply a piece of tape to both the covering and the backing side of the material. Pull in opposite directions and the backing easily separates.

Q-22: I’m new at using iron-on covering and have been having a lot of problems when it comes to separating the backing from the actual covering material. Can you provide any tips that might make things easier for me?

A-22: Until recently I probably had as much trouble as you. The normal technique was to use an X-Acto knife blade and pick away until the two pieces of material finally separated.

I found an interesting suggestion provided by the Solarfilm Co. of Great Britain in its instruction sheet. Solarfilm suggests that you use two pieces of ordinary masking tape. Apply a piece to the front and back corner of your covering material then pull in opposite directions and the backing easily separates from the covering material.
