Long Overdue Honor

President George W. Bush participated in a Congressional Gold Medal ceremony
honoring Tuskegee Airmen—including Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson (R)—in the
US Capitol rotunda in Washington DC. Jim Young photo (c/o Reuters Ltd.).

March 29, 2007, approximately 300 remaining Tuskegee Airmen were finally recognized for the patriotism and ability they demonstrated more than 60 years ago as pilots during World War II.

Tuskegee Airman Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson—whose experiences with the Detroit, Michigan, Skymasters R/C Club were featured in the April MA—was one of six pilots selected to receive the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor on behalf of the group in a special ceremony. The Congressional Gold Medal is the most prestigious civilian award that the US Congress bestows.

President Bush was quoted as saying, [this is to] "help atone for all the unreturned salutes and unforgivable indignities" [they endured] and then saluted the airmen.
