Shelving Arrives
Shelves roll along grooves in the floor
using hand-cranked levers. More shelves have
been
added around the unit to enclose the space,
and walls will be added to secure the area.

AMA's National Model Aviation Museum
recently acquired and installed a
high-density shelving unit for its archives.
The unit maximizes floor space through movement. Six
shelves roll on wheels, with only enough
space for one aisle. As a lever is cranked,
which moves a shelf down the track, the
aisle "moves" as well.
Fixed shelves surround the movable unit. A lockable
door will soon be added to the only entrance
point, and walls will be mounted on the
backs of the fixed shelves for security
purposes.
The Children's Museum of Indianapolis previously owned
the unit. Although it is still in excellent
condition, reuse shaves off two-thirds of
the cost.
The storage unit will provide approximately twice the
space the old archives storage area
provided. The shelving vacated by the
archives collections will expand the area
that is used to store the museum's
three-dimensional collections.
