You meet
some neat people
and make friends for a lifetime.

The
AMA National Aeromodeling Championships has
come to Muncie, Indiana, again, which means
much activity on the site and seeing some
new and old faces.
As I write this, it appears we are down
roughly 70 entries as compared to 2005. Much
work goes into hosting an event of this
size, and regardless of the number of
competitors it takes the same amount of
labor to host a small Nats as it does a
large one.
I believe the price of gas has affected the
turnout, along with the World Championships
that are happening. I also think that
members feel they have to be the best to
compete in the Nats. This is not so. Many
unofficial events take place, and a person
does not need to qualify to participate in
the official events.
All members should take a shot at flying in
the Nats at least once. It is fun and you
meet some neat people and make friends for a
lifetime.
I want to thank all the Special Interest
Groups for their participation in this
year's event. Thanks to the Nats Management
Committeetotally a volunteer groupfor the
long hours they put in to ensure that this
event is held to the highest standards.
Not to put anyone last, I want to thank the
AMA maintenance staff and District III Vice
President Bob Brown for helping make this a
first-class site and preparing the various
areas to handle the many different events
that take place during the Nats.
If you were unable to attend the Nats but
want to see some of what went on and look at
some great photos of the event, go to
www.modelaircraft.org/events/natsnews.asp.
Muncie has had its share of rain, and I
thought the AMA property was going to be
another swimming pool. The rain has stopped
and the ground is drying up, but some of the
areas look rough.
As I have stated before, I can't control
Mother Nature, but I sure hope the weather
stays good for the competitors for the
duration of the Nats and everyone has fun.
By the time you read this column, I will
have attended a strategic planning meeting
and the July Executive Council Meeting. I
will have more to report next month.
I am continuing with the list of Walk of
Fame patrons this month. If you want more
information concerning this program or are
interested in purchasing a commemorative
brick for yourself, your club, or a fellow
modeler, to be placed in front of AMA's
administration building, please visit the
AMA Web site at
www.modelaircraft.org/brick0502.asp.
MA
Safe flying.
