Frequently Asked Questions

Q-49: I have a Hobbico three-channel transmitter (it looks like a Hitec Focus model). Also I have a Hitec Laser 4 FM transmitter. I tried to operate the AM receiver that is part of the Hobbico setup with the Laser 4 FM transmitter. I put the crystal from the Laser 4 setup into the AM receiver of the Hobbico setup. When I tried to operate the airplane, the controls chattered and moved without any operation of the Laser 4 transmitter. Does this mean that the AM receiver can only work with an AM transmitter?

A-49: At the risk of upsetting you, when was the last time you tuned in an FM radio station on your car radio, and then expected to hear an AM station? AM and FM are two completely different forms of modulation and one cannot (can never!) operate the other. It must always be AM to AM or FM to FM. Even then, the FM must also have the same deviation. For example, Airtronics and JR employ high-side FM deviation and are compatible, while Hitec, Futaba, GWS, and FMA use low-side FM deviation and are also compatible. But an Airtronics RC transmitter can not operate a Futaba RC receiver.
