Droning Buzzard

Gus Munich (413 Rio Villa Blvd., Indialantic FL 32903) wrote that he used to fly Drone Diesel-powered models in CL Stunt competition 52 years ago. When his friend Ron Long offered him the pictured model of a 1940s Buzzard Bombshell, Gus knew that a Drone would be the perfect power match for it.

The Drone is fitted with a variable compression head and an Enya RC carburetor. Eric Clutton—also known as Doctor Diesel—supplied some of his Old English diesel fuel mix.

An antique 12 x 6 Master Airscrew propeller is used. Gus wrote, “The Drone was obtained via the Model Engine Collectors Association (MECA). I was the president of that organization roughly 20 years ago.”

Gus reported that nice, long, easy flights are the rule with the Drone-powered model, especially with the engine throttled back.
