Marymoor RC Club (MAR/C) #1610 is an AMA Gold Leader Club established in 1980. The club boasts a huge membership of over 250 and is located inside Marymoor Park in Redmond, Washington. MAR/C enjoys beautiful space in the park, complete with a view of Mt. Rainier.
MAR/C enjoys a large membership due to interest in the region and convenient and visible presence in an urban location. For this reason, 40 or more of its members are youth, from 9 to 18 years old. As an informal group of enthusiastic members, they conceive their own highly entertaining building projects and flying contests, as well as supporting the August Fun Fly.
The flying site is equipped with a grass runway, 380 feet long by 120 feet wide. Recently, the club installed a new permanent storage facility and shelter. The pavilion includes eight power outlets and work benches. Financial support from King County Parks was instrumental in making the construction project happen. The site also includes running drinking water, portable restrooms, ADA parking spaces, parking lot, and pit area with tables.
MAR/C hosts popular spring and fall swap meets, and monthly club meetings in the rainy months. Summer months include a training program, a Memorial Day Warbird Fly-in, June Open House, July Fun Scale Meet, and the August Fun-Fly and BBQ. Monthly meeting topics vary widely, taking advantage of technical expertise in western Washington, from 3D printing airplanes to a history of UAVs. Some of the most popular meetings are “Fix Your Airplane” clinics where members bring broken aircraft and learn building and repairing skills.
STEM and educational outreach includes support as advisors to the University of Washington (UW) AIAA DBF team (American Institute of Aeronautics - Design Build Fly). UW uses the MAR/C field for practice and development. Last year the team won 5th out of about 100 contestants. This year in Wichita, they won 3rd place out of 110 colleges and universities from around the world.
