Johnstown RC got its start in 1962 with about 12 guys who were interested in Model Aviation. Believe it or not, three of the original members are still members now 60 years later. An AMA Gold Leader Club for 29 years in a row now.
Our club name comes from the town we are in, Johnstown, PA. (We are about an hour East of Pittsburgh) We currently have 35 members.
We have had a number of flying fields in our early years, but have been fortunate to have the one we are currently using for almost 45 years now. We lease it from a coal company and we really are pretty far away from homes so we are lucky.
The club field has 900 foot grass runway, with another cross runway about 450 feet long. The club flies electrics, gas, gliders, control line, and drones.
During the warmer months we have a pretty loyal group of retiree's who fly in the mornings, and we have a another group who fly in the evenings, plus Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons/evenings.
We also use the AMA Intro Pilot Program and use trainers with trainer boxes to help newcomers learn our RC skills.
Like many clubs, they have moved into more and more electrics as the batteries have gotten better, but still fly gas and nitro fuel planes most days. The club includes members who are mostly "builders" that have great skills but don't fly much, and have those who buy RTF's or ARF's and just love to fly. The club also includes a few control line fliers.
