The Cobb County RC Modelers #736 was formed in 1965 by a small team of Lockheed model engineers called the "Georgia Lockheed Employee Recreation Club". The original flying site was an area south of the runway at Dobbins Air Force in Marietta, Georgia. Eventually, the club moved to its current location in Acworth, Georgia as part of the Cobb County Parks & Recreation Cultural Affairs in a section labeled the Sports Aviation Complex.
The asphalt runway is 400' x 25' and has multiple taxiway access points. There are multiple covered pilots stations with electrical outlets at each stations. The clubhouse and pavilion areas have running water, restrooms, kitchen amenities, and plenty of parking. When members want to fly their float planes during the Summer, they head over to Lake Acworth.
Currently, there are around 218 members. One reason for the high number is due to the club's active Intro Pilot Program. Introductory training is available on the first and third Thursday each month from 6p - 8p. These sessions are open to the public and trained members volunteer their time training new students with a buddy box system. Non-members are offered three flying lessons under no obligation with many returning to join the club after that.
Some of the club activities include: Fun-Flys, Swap Meets, Float-Flys, an Open House to the public, and host "Calvary Kids" event. Every year in the fall, the club hosts 30 children from the Calvary Children's Home, a local orphanage. The kids are allowed to fly, compete with hand launch planes, and receive lunch, prizes, and treats.
